Audition Pieces |
Bilius.
A typical baddie. Pompous and uninterested in anyone but himself. A rich Senator. Has ambitions to poison Nero and become Emperor himself with the help of his henchmen, Furius & Atrocius (Male) |
 |
Vanilla.
The Pantomime Dame. Confident, jolly and man-hungry, she sees Nero and plans to give him a love potion to make him fall in love with her. It all goes horribly wrong, of course. She should be be outrageously dressed and 'larger than life'. Carries most of the comedy with; Gladioli, Atrocius and Furius. (Male) |
 |
Gladioli
The 'Idle Jack' character. A comedy part. So-called because his mother Vanilla, wanted him to become a heroic gladiator. On the run from Atrocius & Furius, and not very brave. Should be able to relate to the audience. (Male) |
 |
Decius
Very much a 'straight' principal boy part. Falls in love with Fabula, the Emperor's daughter, at first sight. (Female) |
 |
Fabula
The Emperor's daughter. Again a straight principal girl part, though she stands up well to the bullying of Bilius. (Female) |
 |
Nero
The Roman Emperor. Pompous and full of himself, but also nervous of assassination. He is visiting Pompeii on a state visit. (Male) |
 |
Furius
The Bossy One of the comedy pair. Guard to Bilius, the Senator. Not at all as brave as he thinks he is. (Probably male) |
 |
Atrocius
The thicker member of the comedy duo of guards to Bilius. Should get some sympathy from the audience for the stick he gets from the others. (Probably male) |
 |
Amnesia
Local soothsayer and purveyor of doom and gloom. A Roman equivalent to a fairly harmless pantomime witch, not a baddie. (Female preferred, but could be male) |
 |
Hilarius
A small part. An ageing, war-weary and worn-out Roman Centurion. (Male) |
See below |
Vesta, Pasta & Canasta
Small parts for three young 'temple maidens' though they are not naive and know how to handle themselves. (Female) |
 |
|
There are also parts for 6 Children dancers / mini soothsayers.
The LION is a mime / dance part for a teenager or young adult. Please come prepared to perform a short, relevant dance routine.
This will be auditioned at the same time as the childrens' auditions.
The part of HILARIUS will be allocated to a member of the chorus at a later date during rehearsals.
All will be asked to sing, so please prepare a short, 1960s jive-style song to perform. Alternatively we will provide you with a short piece to sing at the audition. Songs that will feature in the show include:
- C’mon Everybody / Eddie Cochran Stupid Cupid / Connie Francis
- Take Good Care of My Baby / Bobby Vee Locomotion / Little Eva
- Wimowey / Jimmy Rogers Trouble / Elvis Presley
You may want to listen to some of these – “YouTube” has them all – before the audition.
Boys and girls aged 6 to 16 – there will be small children’s chorus, which will involve some acting, singing and dancing.
No need for children to prepare an audition piece as material will be taught as a group at the audition
N.B.
